November 2008
Presidents note:
Hello to all Flemish Giant
breeders and enthusiast. I hope your nest boxes are
full and you have great success in the shows you
attend this season. With great regret and sorrow
this will be the Herrings last year of competition
(for now). We started breeding the breed as a way to
enter our daughter Pauline into 4H. We had no idea
when we started how involved we would become. The
Herring family would like to express our thanks to
everyone that has helped us in our venture for the
last seven years. I do not want to mention names at
this time because I may forget one and I do not want
to leave anyone out. But if you know us or have met
us at a show, THANK YOU. Pauline’s last show will
be the 2009 convention in Del Mar, CA. Pauline’s
new goal in life is to spend 6 to 8 weeks in Japan
as a foreign exchange student. For the last 4 years
of breeding and showing rabbits our cost per year to
operate and show has been 5,000.00 to 7,000.00
dollars a year. I myself could keep breeding and
showing rabbits, although it would not be fair to
Pauline. I believe the monies spent on the rabbits
would be far better to go towards Pauline’s new
goals at this
time.
This will be my last year
involved with the West Coast Flemish Giants. I would
like to thank the club members and those who may not
be with the club now who helped start the club. The
W.C.F.G. was started for the youth breeders to have
a chance to compete against other youth along with
the opportunity to show against adults in a combo
open and youth show. It has been very successful.
Over the past couple of years the club has seen a
drop in competition both in open and in youth. This
is probably due to economic reasons. I have spoken
to the board of the club and directors to see if
there was someone who would take over as President
of the club. The conclusion of those meetings was
decided to end the club. Although if there is
someone on the West Coast that would like to take
over as President and keep the club running, please
contact me.
The W.C.F.G. show in March
2009will be the 15th and 16th.
We are pulling out all the strings per say. We will
have some of the best awards the club has ever seen
from gas cards and gift certificates to carrying
cage and grooming table. Did I mention chairs and
cutting boards and much, much, more. We have two
really great judges in Ray Stacy on Saturday to
judge the youth show and the open show. We will have
Dr. Scott Williamson on Sunday to judge the combo
show. We are very thankful to the Smith family to
open there doors and show there hospitality and to
provide us with good food. We will be having a
banquet Saturday night to discuss the clubs plans
and have a nice time. Hope to see you at that show
and others for the remainder of the year. Before I
close I would like to give a special thanks to a few
people and if I leave any ones name out that I Know
or who knows me or I miss spelled your name, give me
a call. My wife Mary Herring, Pauline Herring, John
and Shere Machado, Alan and Tammy Bush, Bill and
Marianne Mairs, Jeff and Anne Mullinax, Dr. Dan
Hall, Jack and Hazel Langley,
Frank and Judie Welch, Bob and Lynn Bolyard, the
