LATE NEWS

 FROM THE

FLEMISH GIANT RABBIT CLUB OF CALIFORNIA

by Joanne Walker - Director FGRCC

After our Bakersfield** show held this past June (which I place next to the Cortland Classic’s facilities for a show), I didn’t think our club could come close to the fun and atmosphere that was had.  Boy, was I wrong.  Barbi Brown’s backyard All Flemish Specialty Show held Saturday, August 14th took the show.  As a matter of fact, she had a show:  a magician who was extraordinaire, fabulous, and even pulled a Flemish out of a “barrel”.  Yes, I did say Flemish (see picture).  The Magician, aka Bob Caldwell, performed during dinner.  I thought I was in South Lake Tahoe or Las Vegas at a dinner show.  The dinner was a buffet styled potluck consisting of barbeque chicken, meaty beef ribs, casseroles, umpteen types of pasta, green, and Jell-O salads, followed with full course of fun and laughter.  Ray Stacy of Escalon did a fabulous job judging the Flemish Giants.  Let’s not forget the wonderful items raffled along with supplies available from Barbi Brown’s Bunnies (3Bs Rabbitry).  Thank you Barbi, Kai, and Tom for the use of their home, acreage for parking, setting up, creating place settings, cooking, and of course the wonder hospitality extended to all.  Thanks to Terry and Chuck Wyckoff for the administrative tasks that go along with these events, Kathy Rynard and Shane Kempton for the awards, and all the others who pitched in to help.  Shane also ramrod – keeping the buns a moving while holding his composure following the Sandy Sr Doe class.  I might add that Shane’s Sandy Sr Doe won Variety and Best in Show with Reserve in Show going to Michelle Ficken’s White 6/8 Buck.  What a nice representation for the Flemish. (see picture).  Congratulations to both of you. I believe all who attended would agree that it is a show they will remember; the magic show, the buffet, the raffle, the rabbit friendships, the judging by the light, and the hospitality.  I bet they have already shared what the show was like with others.  I know I have.

**Letter to the Fair Management:

When Kathy Rynard (my partner in crime and shows) and I walked into the facility we were speechless (believe it or not).  The setting for the rabbit show was spectacular:  availability of coops, cleanliness, wide aisles, plenty of judging coops, seats and benches to rest or wait for your class to be judged, fans for cooling - I know I am leaving out more details.  PLUS the wonderful atmosphere created with visiting old Flemish friends and discovering and developing new friends.  Never have I been to a fairground facility like you have in Kern County.  I have been to one other facility that would come close to Kern County Fairgrounds and that is an all Flemish Giant Specialty Show called the “Courtland Classic” held in Courtland, New York.
