Early Spring 2004 Domestic Rabbit National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders, Inc. By Allen Bush, Secretary We have enjoyed a very mild winter in Southern California so far. Tammy and I have had several Flemish litters born in the first week of February. We sure do not miss chipping dishes and the cold that the rest of the country is forced to endure. I have received word of several Flemish which have won Best in Show, Reserve or Best Six Class so far this season. I would like to congratulate all who help to promote our wonderful animals throughout the USA and bordering countries. The 2004 Sweepstakes have reached the mid point. The leaders with reports submitted as of 02/08/04 are as follows: Bob & Lynn Bolyard, MI – 6,647; Bob & Kathy Bomia, MI – 5,898; Clouse’s of Indiana – 5,849; Jan Van Etten, NY – 5,534; Frank & Judith Welch, PA – 4,997; Dwight & Marge Westercamp, IA – 3,998; Allen & Tammy Bush, CA – 3,100; Jeff & Anne Mullinax, CA – 2,993; Will & Christi Sutton, MO – 2,898; Jack & Hazel Langley, TX – 2,872 Good Luck to all that promote our “Gentle Giants”. I would like to touch on a subject that has been troubling me for a long time. I have noticed several Flemish Breeders who find it necessary to enter animals in the same class under a different family member’s name to try and earn a leg. For example, I have seen five rabbits in a class with 3 exhibitors. Unfortunately, the exhibitors are Joe Rabbit, Jill Rabbit and Joe Jr. Rabbit. I am leaving off the real names. I think you see my point. We as Flemish Breeders must hold ourselves under a higher standard. We raise some of the most magnificent animals that will be judged in any ARBA competition. I know it is probably legal to win legs under this fashion. However, I do not think it is a proper way to try and earn a Grand Champion or some other measurement for one of your animals. I challenge Flemish Breeders, as well as all other Breeds to stop this practice. Tammy and I measure our rabbits on how well they do against actual competition. We do not even keep our legs due to the way that some breeders feel a need to bend the rules. Please keep this in mind the next time you send in an entry for a future show. I think you will be happier in the long run and get more satisfaction when you actually earn your next leg. TAMMY AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MANY OF YOU AT A SHOW REAL SOON.
PLAN ON ATTENDING THE 2ND ANNUAL ALL-FLEMISH SHOW WEEKEND. THE SHOW WILL BE ON THE WEEKEND OF MAY 15TH AND 16TH.
DO NOT FORGET IT IS A “DOUBLE SWEEPSTAKES SHOW” IN THE NATIONAL SHOW.
