Domestic Rabbit Submission Winter 2002

National Federation of Flemish Giant

Rabbit Breeders, Inc.

By Allen Bush, Secretary

As I write this letter, the convention has just ended and we have made it back home. I hope that every Flemish breeder had a good time in Peoria. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work during the 2002 convention. Take a minute and congratulate all the winners and losers for coming to the convention and displaying true sportsmanship. Please send me pictures and updates for the December newsletter. We need any guide book advertisements by the end of November. I also need any articles and Rabbitry advertisements by December 1st.

We have several All-Flemish Giant shows to report since the last Domestic Rabbit submission. In August, the newly formed West Coast Flemish club held a show in Monterey with Allen and Tammy Bush winning Best of Breed with a Sandy Senior Doe. Jeff & Anne Mullinax won Best Opposite with a Fawn 6/8 Buck. The West Branch Specialty show was held in September. Herb & Emily Carter claimed the top spot with a Light Gray Senior Doe. Wayne & Bonnie Bechdel won Best Opposite of Breed with a Sandy 6/8 Buck. The Cortland Classic at Harold’s house was held in September. Sean Slater and James O’Connor claimed the top two spots. Sean’s Senior Sandy Doe and James’s Fawn Senior Buck were the big winners. The Michigan Flemish Club held two shows in September. Bob & Lynn Bolyard won the first show with a Sandy Junior Buck and Skip & Kathi Cordner won Best Opposite of Breed with a Sandy Senior Doe. The second show went to the Clouse’s of Indiana with a Fawn Senior Doe. Bob & Lynn Bolyard won Best Opposite of Breed with the same Sandy Junior Buck. The ARBA convention was dominated by the West Coast. Jeff & Anne Mullinax from California won the top two spots with a Sandy Junior Doe and a Fawn Senior Buck. Jordy Lohn from Arizona won the top two spots in the youth with a pair of outstanding Sandies. I would like to thank our three judges. Armando Cabrera, Dr. Chris Hayhow and Bruce Ormsby did an outstanding job in sorting our wonderful animals. We also had some special recognition awards during the convention. Herb & Emily Carter and Myrl & Kathy Costa were recognized for all of their efforts in helping to promote our breed. Three youths were also recognized for outstanding accomplishments during the last year. Travis McCornack, Justin Good and Ryan Born were given awards during the convention.

The top point leaders in the 2003 Sweepstakes series with reports submitted as of 10/10/02 are as follows: Bob & Lynn Bolyard, MI 2,038; Jeff & Anne Mullinax, CA 1,656; Jan Van Etten, NY 1,565; Green Lane Rabbitry, PA 1,127; Clouses of Indiana 913; Bob & Kathy Bomia, MI 785; Lakeside Rabbitry, ME 778; Charles & Alyce Cook, IL – 734; Allen & Tammy Bush, CA 707; Bill & Bessie Pearsall, PA 681. Good Luck to all that promote our "Gentle Giants".

Please try to attend several Flemish shows during the next couple of months. Cooler temperatures seem to bring out the best in Flemish at the show table. I hope this will be the story during the 2003 convention which will be held in early November instead of early October. I am confident that a Flemish will be best in show during the 2003 ARBA convention. We certainly have had to endure an unprecedented dry spell since a Flemish was picked best in show during a convention. Hopefully, Glen Carr and Joey Shults will be able to put one of our members back on top. I will continue to send all parties interested in purchasing a Flemish to the website. Please register your Rabbitry with Jeff Mullinax. The website is www.nffgrb.com.
