National Federation of Flemish Giant

Rabbit Breeders Inc.

Celebrating  our 95th year
1915 - 2010

Welcome to the official home page of the National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders, one of the oldest Breed clubs in the US.   The purpose of the NFFGRB has always been to promote and improve the Flemish Giant breed.  The club does this using this website, quarterly newsletters, a wonderful guidebook, and by encouraging the exhibition of Flemish Giants at ARBA Rabbit Shows through the sweepstakes program.

Whether you are new to this wonderful breed or a long time enthusiast, please
spend a few minutes looking around to learn more about these remarkable animals.

Note to all who visit the NFFGRB web site:

The National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders and its Executive Board only recognize the Seven Varieties (colors) of Flemish Giants presently approved and listed in the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) Standard of Perfection.  Those Colors are:

BLACK, BLUE, FAWN, LIGHT GRAY, SANDY,
STEEL GRAY, WHITE

NO OTHER COLORS (VARIETIES) SHOULD BE REFERRED TO AS FLEMISH GIANTS UNLESS THE BREEDER HAS OBTAINED A C.O.D. (Certificate of Development) FROM THE ARBA AND IS FOLLOWING PROPER PROCEDURES TO GET ANOTHER VARIETY ACCEPTED.   PRESENTLY, VARIETIES THAT ARE NOT ACCEPTED BY OUR STANDARD WOULD BE  DISQUALIFIED ON THE SHOW TABLE BY ARBA JUDGES, AND BY NOT MEETING THE DEFINITION SET FORTH IN THE BREED STANDARD, WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED FLEMISH GIANTS. (PLEASE REFER TO THE ARBA STANDARD OF PERFECTION FOR FLEMISH GIANTS)

MEMBERSHIP NOTES:

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF FLEMISH GIANTS

SWEEPSTAKES GUIDELINES

EFFECTIVE STARTING JULY 1, 2010

  •  All ARBA rules are to be followed at all times.  The ARBA does not dictate Sweepstake Guidelines to Specialty Clubs, but they do have rules governing the ownership of youth rabbits, show entry form requirements etc. that must be followed.   For example:  Points are recorded under the name used for show entry, which must match the membership name.  No points will be issued in a rabbitry name.

  •

  • The Federation has two separate Sweepstakes’s.  That is the “Open”, and the “Youth”.   The Open will receive awards for the top ten placements yearly.   The Youth will receive awards for the top five placements yearly. The season will start on July 1st of each year and end the last day of June each year. (The open and youth sweepstakes are not combined in any way, nor should they be confused by members as being the same…. They are separate Sweepstakes and cannot be put together in anyway.

  •

  • Youth members can show either in the Youth Sweepstakes or if they elect in the Open Sweepstakes.   They cannot show in both.  They must notify the Sec./Trea. Prior to July 1st that they are going to show in the Open Sweepstakes.   All those not electing to show in the open by July 1st will be showing in the Youth only.  The youth will be recognized by our Federation thru the entire year of their 19th birthday for Youth Sweepstake points. (Note:  any youth electing to show for Open Sweepstakes must show in the Open shows only.   Youth shows will not count for their points).

  • Sweepstake points cannot be moved when an exhibitor uses a different name.  With the exception of a woman who has shown as a single, and changes her name due to a marriage or divorce.  Note:  A husband and wife points are not split or transferred upon a divorce.  They will have to make changes in the next year’s sweepstakes.

  • Family or Two members showing together.  A)  Family’s electing to show as a family with adults can only show in the open sweepstake shows- No youth show points will be allowed.  B)  Two members may show together as a partnership as long as both are members of good standing with the Federation, and live in the same state.  Partnerships must be declared, in writing to the current sweepstakes chairperson prior to July 1st of the sweepstake year.  (All “show entry’s” must include all the names of the members showing together to count in the sweepstake points.)

  •

  • Youth members will be allowed to show as a family.  This is only the youth in the family, and no adults.   They must enter all their names on the show entry to receive points.   They must in writing tell the Sweepstake Chairperson they are showing together prior to July 1st of each year, and cannot change their election during the year.  Note:  Only Youth members will receive youth sweepstakes points.   Note:  The Federation encourages youth members to own their own rabbits, take care of them, and show them as individuals as to inspire good sportsmanship to their fellow youth members.  Adults must set the right examples for the youth members.

  •

  • Youth members will be required to show in youth shows, unless there is no youth show available.  If a youth shows in an open show and a youth show is available, they will receive no points from the open show toward the sweepstake award.  Open and youth points will not be  combined.

  • At no time will sweepstake points be combined when partners show as individuals.   All names must be on the entry form, as shown in the sweepstake points.

  • Any member showing with a non-member in a joint entry will not receive any sweepstake points from the Federation.
  •

  • Any member Open or Youth who elect not to continue membership during the Sweepstake year for any reason will not receive Sweepstake awards for that year.   The Open and Youth must be continuous members for the entire year to receive awards from the Federation.  Note:  Members have a 45 day grace period for membership renewals.  No points are awarded to expired memberships, and accumulated points are lost for interrupted memberships.

  •

  • Husband and Wife members will be split for sweepstake points only when they enter as individuals.   Both names must appear on the show entry form for them to get partnership points.

  •

  •

  • The Federation Board will approve and govern all rules pertaining to the Sweepstake Guidelines.  These rules can be changed as required by the board to insure that problems are resolved, or that proper sportsmanship etc. are being followed by all the members, or any items that require more guidelines amended.   (Revised May, 2010)

Robert Bomia,  President

YOUR PRESIDENTS REPORT -  Robert Bomia

 June 2010

Fellow Breeders and Friends, the last few months has produced some great Specialty Show results across the Country.   The Shows have been well attended and it is apparent that we have many members showing at the tables.   Recently, Kathy and I attended the Michigan All Flemish Shows at Bob and Lynn Bolyard’s home in Reading, Michigan, and had and outstanding time.   It was so good to see all the good people enjoying themselves at the show, and having come so far to attend the show.   We had members from Texas, Conn., Maryland, Pa., North Carolina, Missouri, and Wisconsin to name a few areas.   It was so good to share the weekend with so many nice members of our fine organization.

THE NEW GUIDE BOOK -  You must get your ads to Bob Bolyard in the near future or bid on the open covers prior to the end of July.   Now is the time to put your name in Flemish History.  The New Guide Book will be completed soon.  You can put your name and rabbitry in the Flemish Giant History. (This must happen right away)

The National Convention will be In Minneapolis, MN , Nov. 7-11, 2010.  Judges will be Bob Shaftoe, and Anna Dapper in the Open, and we also requested Ruth Dapper to do the youth.  Karen Clouse will be the Breed chairperson and Doc Dan Hall will be the show Supt...  Doc has made arrangements for all of us to stay in one hotel, and for our banquet.  If you want to nominate fellow members for awards please do it now……….   Send nominations to:  Jack Langley , chairperson for, “ Honor Roll”,   Doc Hall, chairperson for “Master Breeders Award”, and Dawn Buuck, chairperson for, “Youth Recognition Awards”.

Our National Show in Sedalia, Mo. On April 10th was well attended by our members and a giant success.   Personal thanks to John Davis, Gene and Sue Gillispie from the Midwest Flemish Giant RC for all the hard work for the Federation.  Congratulations to Marc Griffith for Open Best of Breed, and Jack Langley for Best Opp Breed.   Jack in fact got Best of Breed in two of the Three shows, and had Best 6 class on Sunday (Outstanding).  Show results should be in this newsletter.  Thank you Jerry Carver for the BBQ on Friday night.

Our upcoming National Show will be held in Jefferson City, Wisconsin on April 9th, 2011 in conjunction with the Upper Midwest Flemish Giant Rabbit Club.  Doc Dan Hall, President, and Bruce Johnson, Sec/Trea..    I got a great idea from Bruce who suggested we have a National Flemish Federation meeting at our National Shows to give those that cannot afford to attend the National Convention a chance to participate.   This would give us an opportunity to have two meetings each year.   We will start with this show.

The Federation Board voted to have the 2012 National Show in Fort Worth Texas on April 21,22, 2012.   This will be in conjunction with the Texas Flemish Giant RBA with Tom Barker, and our VP Jack Langley the hosting executives.   THOSE SPECIALTY CLUBS WISHING TO HOST THE 2013 NATIONAL FLEMISH GIANT SHOW WILL NEED TO GET REQUESTS TO ROBERT BOMIA BY MARCH 1ST, 2011.

Recently we have lost some of our very valued members who have passed on to heaven.  Our warmest condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of Laverne Sikes, Jim Bennet, and Judges Harry Rice and Eabert “Fibber” McGehee.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and these wonderful people, their many fine memories will remain in our hearts forever.   May God bless you.    Also we need to all keep in mind our members who are not doing well and have had health problems.  To mention a few, Mabel Tobias (Not doing very well), Bob Bolyard, John Trone, John Davis, Sara Shumate,  and my loving wife Kathy who is having feet problems.  We will be praying for all of you.

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank Karen Clouse for the outstanding job she has done as our Sec/Trea., and also our Webmaster.   The Website has and is giving us a lot of problems to update or use.   Karen has relentlessly been in pursuit of fixing these issues.  (Please be patient).

I have enjoyed being on the board for over 20 years, and your President for the last several years.   With your support, I look forward to many more years of serving you.   May God bless you and be with your family.  Until we meet at the shows may your nest boxes be full of Grand Champions.

For the Members,  Bob Bomia -  bestbugs@chartermi.net  - 734-241-1960
